Satya Vaarta: Message by Dr. Domingos Xavier Viegas on ‘How Gandhi’s message influenced his life and work’ (05.06.2019)

Dr. Domingos Xavier Viegas is an Indian-origin Portuguese national and is a full professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra.

In 1990, he founded the Association for the Development of Industrial Aerodynamics (ADAI), a research unit recognized by the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation (FCT) where he is the director of the Centre for Forest Fires. He has dedicated in the investigation of forest fires, natural hazards, and safety.

On January 31, 2017, he was awarded the "IAWF Wildland Fire Safety Award", by the International Association of Wildland Fire (IAWF), a non-profit association that represents the whole world, the scientific and operational community in the area of forest fires. This award was given in Barcelona to Prof. Xavier Viegas and his team in recognition of their more than 30 years of dedication and work in the area of the fire, safety, and fighting against forest fires. This is one of the most prestigious awards. Since 1997, it is the 14th award given in the whole world and only the 2nd to be given in Europe.
He was commissioned by the Portuguese Government to coordinate a work group to elaborate a report on the fires in Portugal.
