Formalities for repatriation of mortal remains from Portugal to India

1. In order to repatriate the mortal remains of an Indian national who died in Portugal to India, the services of a funeral agency in Portugal need to be engaged. The funeral agency will assist in obtaining various certificates and completing the documentation required for the repatriation of mortal remains to India.
2. Below are the documents that are needed by the Embassy to issue the death certificate:

   2. Original and Photocopy of passport of the deceased
   3. Death certificate (original and one copy) issued by Portuguese registration office
   4. Cause of death certificate (original and copy) issued by the Hospital
   5. Sanitary certificate (original and copy) for transport of corpses from Portugal to India issued by Portuguese Health Authority
   6. “Livre-Transito Mortuario” (Free Mortuary Traffic) (original and one copy) issued by PSP (Policia de Seguranca Publica)
   7. Embalming Certificate (original and one copy)
   8. Identity document (original and one copy) for the person registering the death.

(Note-All the certificates from serial no iii to vii needs to be duly translated in English and notarized by Portuguese notary.)

3. After Death certificate is issued and the relevant documents are attested by the Embassy, the Funeral Agency will upload the same on the e-Care portal ( https://ecare.mohfw.gov.in/  )to obtain the necessary clearance from the authorities in India.
4. Once the clearance is granted, the mortal remains can be repatriated to India.
5. Please be advised that the entire process may take approximately 7-10 working days. In cases where the cause of death is not immediately confirmed, Portuguese courts may order an autopsy. This may result in additional delays to the process.
6. The Embassy will extend all required help in the matter.
