Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of a Strong Alliance

India and Portugal maintain a multilateral alliance with deep historical roots. More recently, this connection has acquired modern dimensions through the strengthening of political, economic, defense, cultural, and technological cooperation. Both countries share common democratic values and constitute liberal, open, and pluralistic societies with similar perspectives on various issues of international concern. Democratic values and multilateralism are valued by both countries, which contributes to the good relationship between the two nations.

The cultural and historical ties between the two countries represent an important dimension of this alliance. The many tangible traces of our shared past include architectural heritage, words in Portuguese and Indian languages, as well as Portuguese place names and surnames. Peppers, so characteristic of Indian cuisine, were introduced by the Portuguese. In fact, India's agrarian identity was transformed, as contact with the Portuguese led to the introduction of fruits such as tomatoes, pineapples, and papayas. Popular Indian dishes such as vindaloo, xacuti, and bebinka, with Portuguese origins, enrich our gastronomic and culinary connections. A fundamental link in this growing alliance has been the vibrant Indian diaspora, which has played an important role in strengthening bilateral ties, acting as a living bridge between the two nations. Recently, many Indian citizens have chosen Portugal as their new home, seeking new opportunities. These citizens have made a decisive contribution to the Portuguese economy and society.

In recent years, there has been increased cooperation between India and Portugal, particularly in the areas of trade and investment, science and technology, education, and culture. The growing Indian economy offers opportunities for Portuguese companies in sectors such as infrastructure, renewable energy, construction, and technology development. India's expanding middle class is also an attractive market for Portuguese products and services. Both nations are now considering expanding relations into new and emerging fields such as IT, digital technology, renewable energy, start-ups and innovation, mobility of professionals and skilled workers, green energy, and green hydrogen. Portugal's expertise in renewable energy has sparked considerable interest from India, as India demonstrates a growing commitment to achieving its goals in this area. The increasing presence of Indian students in Portuguese universities is an important aspect of the growing educational ties between the two nations. Both countries are exploring new forms of collaboration in research and development.

Our relations have been guided by regular political interactions at the highest level. The two sides meet periodically at the highest level, both bilaterally and in parallel with international events such as the G20 and the United Nations General Assembly. Bilateral ties are equally strengthened by the steady pace of increasing trade flows. It is encouraging to observe the growth in trade, which reached €1.25 billion last year, despite global crises and challenges. The two countries work together on other international issues, particularly in the areas of climate change, reform of the multilateral system, and combating terrorism. Portugal has supported India's claims to play a more prominent role on the world stage and has been a supporter of India's permanent membership status on the United Nations Security Council.

The year 2025 holds special significance as it marks the 50th anniversary of the re-establishment of bilateral relations between India and Portugal. Top leaders from both countries have decided to celebrate this historic year in a fitting manner. To mark this occasion, various dance, music, cultural, academic, literary, and film events are being organized. The highlight will be the state visit of the President of India. President Droupadi Murmu will visit Portugal at the invitation of the President of the Portuguese Republic on April 7th and 8th, 2025. The visit reflects the importance India places on its relations with Portugal. Together with the President of the Portuguese Republic, she will launch a commemorative stamp marking the important milestone of the 50th anniversary of the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Currently, India and Portugal are on similar trajectories, as two democracies focused on promoting sustainable economic growth, trade, investment, industry, and innovation. With our inherent synergies and possibilities for collaboration across various sectors, our historic partnership, spanning half a millennium, is solidly geared towards becoming a dynamic and future-oriented partnership. The future of India-Portugal relations is auspicious and imbued with opportunities for greater harmony in order to build a robust and dynamic alliance. Leveraging our shared history and cultural ties, as well as our common interests in the modern world, India and Portugal can face a prosperous future for both nations.
